Mike Buchanan

Chair of the International Positive Education Network (IPEN) - Europe/UK.

A recognized national leader; an executive and non-executive with experience of strategic change management in complex organisations, audit and regulatory compliance frameworks, good governance, successful business and financial management, and positive leadership development including coaching for improved performance. Described by others as inspiring, calm, consistent, far-sighted, positive, engaging, authoritative, honest, creative, compassionate, determined, reflective, steely, impatient and self-critical.

Mike Buchanan is the Executive Director of HMC, the English speaking world's oldest association of Headteachers. He is also the Chair UK/Europe of the International Positive Education Network (IPEN).

He was most recently the Head of an all age (0-18), coeducational, day/boarding school, growing it from 350 to over 1,000 children and young people, a National Leader of Education and a Reporting Inspector. His school was voted Independent School of the Year in 2010/11 and has been nominated for the same award several times since including 2016. Mike was a finalist for the i25 Awards 2019, Headteacher of the Year at the Teaching Awards 2015 and his team was awarded Team of the Year 2015 in the Kent Teaching Awards.

Mike was previously the elected Chair of the Headmasters' & Headmistresses' Conference (HMC), the Heads’ association of leading independent schools in the UK and worldwide. In this role, his priorities included the encouragement of women into school leadership, the central role of independent schools in exemplifying the benefits of a broad and challenging school experience beyond exams and the promotion of collaboration across the state and independent sectors in the UK.
